This book is not a serious contribution to travel-literature. I have made no attempt to interpret the way of life in the lands that I have visited or even to describe the beauties of nature and the works of art to be found there. My intention is only to record my own experiences in a number of places to which curiosity or circumstances beyond my own control have taken me, in the hope that they may serve to encourage or to warn travellers of the future.
