Palaipaphos, the seat of the priest-kings known as Kinyrades, is the only important urban center in southwestern Cyprus from the Late Bronze Age to the early Hellenistic period. A work by Professor F. G. Maier, Hon FSA (excavator of the archaeological site at Kouklia since 1952), with two contributions by S. Hadjisavvas and M.-L. von Wartburg, FSA, it traces the history of Palaipaphos over almost five millennia, from the Chalcolithic Age to the present day, and describes in detail all the monuments preserved at the archaeological site of Palaipaphos (now Kouklia). In addition to the Sanctuary of Aphrodite, these monuments also include two unique archaeological sites: the rampart built by the Persians on the side of the Northeast Gate during the siege of the city and the exceptionally well-preserved medieval sugar processing facilities at the Kouklia-Stavros site. Palaipafos is included in the UNESCO World Heritage List.
