Iklaina. The monumental buildings

Τhe present volume publishes the stratigraphy and general description of the buildings and structures located in the sector of the Cyclopean Platform. These are formal and monumental structures, clustered together in a distinct part of the settlement that is clearly separated from the residential and industrial quarters and accessed through a gateway.

The dominant architectural feature of the site is a massive stone platform built in the Cyclopean manner. The purpose of this Cyclopean Platform was to support a two- or three-story building complex that towered over the settlement. Unfortunately, over the course of the centuries the Cyclopean Platform and its adjacent buildings suffered extensive damage, both by the elements of nature and the hand of man.

The excavation of the Cyclopean Platform started in 2009. It had been preceded by trial trenches in 2006 and the first season of systematic excavation in 2008, in the residential and industrial buildings of the North Sector. The full excavation of the Cyclopean Platform and its adjacent structures was carried out between 2009 and 2013; the excavation of Building X, the paved roads, and the Pit began in 2011. The areas to the north of the Platform, around Building X, and the Gateway were excavated between 2011 and 2013 and between 2015 and 2017. The majority of the finds were studied as they were being excavated, but additional study seasons in preparation for the publication of the material were conducted in 2014 and 2017.
