«This book was completed more than fifteen years ago. When it became clear that it was unlikely to be published, I asked George Katsimbalis, on the last occasion on which I saw him before his death, what I should do with the manuscript. His advice was to deposit it with the Costis Palamas foundation, which is his own creation. It was therefore with much pleasure that I accepted the offer of the Foundation to publish it, though with misgivings that it is now outdated.
The book was written to help English students of modern Greek literature grasp the problems involved in laying the foundations upon which Greek twentieth century authors have built and to explain why Costis Palamas was so central a figure in that process.
