The present study is a detailed synchronic description of the dialect of Kythera on all levels of linguistic analysis, based on the analysis of authentic dialectal speech from the personal, in situ fieldwork of the writer. The most important phonetic, morphological, syntactic and vocabulary phenomena that make up the dialect of Kythera are documented ia a systematic way, whilw thw reader can find a large number of examples that shed light upon linguistic phenomena.
This study contributes to the filed of dialectology,as
– it is a scientific study of the Kytherian dialect, documenting systematically phenomena that until today were not pointed out of described according to a robust methodology
– it preserves the Kytherian dialect, which like the remaining Modern Greek dialects, is receding
– it compares the dialect of Kythera with other related regional varieties (the dialect of the Ionian islands, Mani, Crete, Thera), providing abasis for future more specialized studies
– it documents a large number of Kytherian words, providing significant information on the etymology of the Kytherian dialectal vocabulary
– it sets the ground for a more thorough examination of the contribution of the Kytherian geographical variety to the formation of Standard Modern Greek
