«This story opens with the crushing Greek defeat of 1897 and closes with the triumphal entry of the Greek _forces into Thessaloniki on 8 November 1912 and with the acquisition of considerable gains in Macedonia at the Treaty of Bucharest of 10 August 1913. During the intervening years much had happened, not only in Greece itself but outside the confines of the Greek Κing dom. Within Greece itself there bad emerged, in spite of the traditional scene of stormy party politics, a greater awareness of national responsibilities, a more realistic approach to national aims and, as a reaction to the despair following the defeat of ’97, a considerable improvement in the national morale.
