The proceedings of the International Conference “The Salonica Theatre of Operations and the Outcome of the Great War”, organised in Thessaloniki on April 16th – 18th, 2002 by the Foundation and the Institute for Balkan studies are contained in this publication. This is a collective publication with the participation of distinguished Greek and foreign scientists aiming at the projection of the substantial contribution of the Salonica Theatre of Operations to the outcome of the First World War, as Thessaloniki was the starting point of the victorious counter attack, in September 1918, that led to the gradual capitulation of Bulgaria, the Ottoman Empire, Austria-Hungary and finally, Germany. The front of Thessaloniki might have been one of the most discreet regarding concentration of military power, strategic priorities and losses but it made up in an effective way for its three-year existence. These historical facts have been underestimated by international historians. On the occasion of study and analysis of a historic event, this publication attempts to fill this gap, by emphasising on the geostrategic importance of the broader Greek territory.
