Monetary portraiture in the Northern Black Sea littoral

This is the second issue of Memoranda Numismatica Atheniensia, a product of the Benaki Museum’s collaboration with the Welfare Foundation for Social and Cultural Affairs (KIKPE). Sergei A. Kovalenko’s published and richly illustrated text is linked to the exhibition “Heads and Tails – tales and Bodies: Engraving the Human Figure from Antiquity to the Modern Period (Pushkin Museum, Moscow, 2016) and focuses on the study of numismatics of the northern Black Sea coast, and in particular on the matter of figurative figures in the coins of the cities and states of the region.

Πρόκειται για το δεύτερο τεύχος της σειράς Memoranda Numismatica Atheniesia, προϊόν συνεργασίας του Μουσείου Μπενάκη με το Κοινωφελές Ίδρυμα Κοινωνικού και Πολιτιστικού έργου (ΚΙΚΠΕ). Το δημοσιευόμενο και πλούσια εικονογραφημένο κείμενο του Sergei A. Kovalenko συνδέεται με την έκθεση «Heads and Tails – Tales and Bodies: Engraving the Human Figure from Antiquity to the Early Modern Period» (Μουσείο Πούσκιν, Μόσχα, 2016) και επικεντρώνεται στη μελέτη της νομισματικής των βορείων ακτών του Εύξεινου Πόντου, και ιδιαίτερα στο ζήτημα των εικονιστικών μορφών στις νομισματικές εκδόσεις των πόλεων και κρατών της περιοχής αυτής.
